Tooth decay is one of the most common diseases in the world today. It is believed that distributing Xylitol Gummy Bears in a school setting will help reduce the burden of this chronic childhood disease in the US and Europe. Gummy Bear sweets contain an anti-plaque sweetener that is designed to fight tooth decay. Xylitol, the tooth-protecting sugar substitute is today being incorporated into Gummy Bears for the production of a sweet snack that may prevent dental problems. When a child is given four Xylitol bears three times a day during their school hours, this results in a decrease in the plaque bacteria that is known to cause tooth decay.
Studies were conducted on American school-going children, which concluded that giving Gummy Bears to them 3 times a day was effective in reducing the quantities of plaque bacteria that are responsible for causing tooth decay. Gummy Bears contain Xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is already in use in chewing gum, and which has been marketed as being good for teeth. However, because small children should not eat chewing gum, scientists were able to find an alternative way of giving them Xylitol, which was just as effective.
The research was carried out on 150 children aged between 5 – 10 who were randomly assigned to take low dose or high dose Xylitol Gummy Bears or those that contained Mannitol, a different artificial sweetener. The results were published in the journal BMC Oral Health and demonstrated significant reductions on the plaque that causes bacteria amongst children that eat both kinds of Gummy Bears. Experts believe that in order for Xylitol to be successfully utilized in oral health promotion programs amongst primary-school children, an effective method for the delivery of Xylitol had to be developed. As such, Gummy Bears were deemed to be more suitable in comparison to chewing gum.
From these results, researchers concluded that a Xylitol Gummy Bear snack could be a good alternative to Xylitol chewing gum for the prevention of dental caries. However, a larger clinical trial may still be necessary for the confirmation of the Xylitol results. Researchers were surprised that both the Xylitol and Mannitol groups revealed reductions in plaque bacteria. In previous research, Xylitol has proven effective in aiding in the prevention of tooth decay. However, evidence regarding Mannitol has been conflicting, although this substance is very similar.
While, this is not a license for parents to go giving their children gum bears instead of meals, a handful of these chewy fruit treats could go a long way in helping to improve their overall dental hygiene. The main reason why such treats are good for children’s teeth is because Xylitol, one of their key ingredients, works in starving off bacteria, viruses and parasites that cause cavities. It is possible today to find this magical cavity-fighting candy at your local candy counter. If unable to get your hands on Gummy Bears with Xylitol, you may alternatively chew on other Xylitol-based gums and mints that are available on the market today.
