What if you could have a beautiful smile in a relatively short time? With Invisalign®, you can. Invisalign® is not just braces, but a system of treatment, with some definite advantages over traditional braces.
Why Do I Need Straight Teeth?
Getting braces isn’t just a matter of having an attractive smile. Crooked, badly spaced teeth can make dental hygiene more difficult, increasing the odds of getting cavities or gum disease. When teeth are crowded close together, it’s more difficult to floss and to clean the teeth properly. Gum disease has also been implicated in more serious health problems, like heart disease. Finally, crooked teeth may wear unevenly, making it more difficult to chew food properly and even causing pain.
Invisalign® achieves the same end result as traditional braces: straight teeth. Actually, though, Invisalign® braces aren’t really braces at all. They’re clear plastic aligners that fit over the teeth. Many people won’t even know that you’re wearing them. Unlike metal braces that may rub against your cheeks or lips and cause sore spots, Invisalign® aligners are comfortable to wear. And since they aren’t braces, you don’t need to go in every few weeks to have them tightened. Invisalign® treatment may also take less time than conventional treatment.
You don’t have to wear metal brackets, and wires are not necessary. Each aligner is built to specifications that match your condition. You can also easily remove the aligner to eat, floss or brush your teeth. Because you can remove them to eat, there are no food restrictions as there are with conventional braces. You can eat popcorn and nuts, for example. If you play a sport, you don’t have to worry about getting hit in the mouth with a ball and having your braces cut your lip or gums.
The Invisalign® system starts with a visit to Central Avenue Dental. You’ll have X-rays, pictures and impressions made of your teeth, which your dentist will use to create a 3D digital image. Using the latest computer technology, the dentist will develop a treatment plan that is customized to your particular needs. The images can show exactly how your teeth will move at each stage of treatment. Your dentist will also be able to give you an approximate treatment time (usually about one year for adults, and 15-18 months for teens).
How it Works
Once the computer model and treatment plan have been developed, your dentist will order the aligners. Each aligner is slightly different from the preceding aligner, so that your teeth gently and gradually move into position. You’ll wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, for an average of 20 to 22 hours a day. As mentioned, you can take them out to eat or clean your teeth. You’ll need to see them for a checkup about every six weeks to check your progress, and so the treatment plan can be adjusted if necessary.
Once you’ve finished the Invisalign® treatment, you may need to wear a Vivera retainer until your teeth stabilize in position. Like Invisalign® aligners, the retainer is made from clear plastic and is essentially invisible. And of course, you should continue with your basic oral hygiene routine: floss daily, brush your teeth twice a day, and see your dentist twice a year for cleaning and a checkup.
