What is a Tooth Extraction?
Getting a tooth extraction in NYC can be simple or surgical. The method of extraction depends on the circumstances of your condition. Simple tooth removal is usually used if teeth are visible and can be easily accessed while using local anesthesia. Surgical tooth extraction is a more complex procedure for teeth that cannot be easily removed if they have only partially erupted or have broken down underneath the gum line.
The reasons for having a tooth pulled include:
- A tooth that has been badly damaged by trauma or decay
- A crowded mouth (as with wisdom teeth)
- Preventing the spread of infection
What to Expect During a Tooth Removal
In most situations, a tooth can be extracted using a local anesthetic administered by the dentist. This is done to numb the area. In certain cases, for example, if your tooth is impacted, your dentist may put you under general anesthesia. In such cases, you will be asleep during the procedure.
Following your tooth removal, recovery typically takes a couple of days. Your dentist will prescribe measures to reduce infection and help recovery.
Care after tooth extraction may include:
- Limiting activity and applying ice
- Eating soft food
- Brushing around the treated area
