Periodontics Q & A
What is periodontics?
Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of gum disease. There are several types of gum disease, but the team at Central Avenue Dental specifically focuses on two:
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is a mild infection that causes your gums to bleed, swell, and become irritated. When caught early on, it’s possible to prevent further complications by practicing good oral hygiene and regularly visiting the dentist.
Periodontitis
Periodontitis occurs when gingivitis remains untreated. Over time, it causes the gums to pull away from your teeth and form pockets. Harmful bacteria, food particles, and saliva collect in these pockets, increasing the risk of more serious problems like tooth loss.
What are the symptoms of gum disease?
Common symptoms of gum disease include:
- Red, swollen, or puffy gums
- Gums that bleed easily
- Bad breath
- Gums that are tender to the touch
As gum disease progresses, you might also experience loose teeth.
What services does periodontics provide?
At Central Avenue Dental, the team offers several types of periodontics:
Laser gum therapy
Laser gum therapy uses targeted light energy to remove plaque and tartar from beneath your gum line. After removing the plaque and tartar, your provider smooths your tooth roots, allowing your gums to reattach to your teeth.
Arestin® antibiotic therapy
If laser gum therapy isn’t enough to prevent gum disease from recurring, the team might recommend Arestin antibiotic therapy. During Arestin therapy, your provider implants a series of small beads beneath your gums. The beads break down over time and release antibiotic drugs that help fight the infection.
Gum grafts
If you develop periodontitis and it causes your gums to recede, a gum graft might be necessary. During a gum graft procedure, your provider takes a piece of tissue from the roof of your mouth and stitches it around the area of missing gum tissue. Over time, the graft fuses with your gums, preventing further recession.
Osseo Surgery in Periodontics
Osseo surgery, also known as osseous or flap surgery, is a specialized periodontal procedure aimed at treating advanced gum disease by reshaping the bone structure around teeth. At Central Avenue Dental, we offer advanced osseo surgery techniques to help preserve your natural teeth, restore gum health, and improve oral stability.
What Is Osseo Surgery?
Osseo surgery involves carefully lifting the gums to gain access to the roots and supporting bone. During the procedure, infected tissue is removed, tartar buildup is cleared from the root surfaces, and the bone is smoothed to reduce spaces where bacteria can thrive. This allows the gum tissue to reattach more securely to healthy bone and tooth surfaces.
When Is It Needed?
Osseo surgery is typically recommended when non-surgical treatments like scaling and root planing are no longer effective. If you’re experiencing deep periodontal pockets, bone loss, or chronic inflammation, this procedure can stop disease progression and prevent tooth loss.
Why Choose Us?
Our periodontal specialists use precision techniques, modern tools, and patient-centered care to deliver excellent outcomes. We focus on minimally invasive methods to ensure faster healing, reduced discomfort, and lasting results. Every treatment plan is customized to your oral health needs.
Who can benefit from periodontics?
Anyone who is living with gum disease can benefit from periodontics. Following an oral exam, a review of your dental health history, and a series of oral X-rays, the team can develop a custom treatment plan that aligns with your needs.
