Is Invisalign Right for Your Teen?

Is Invisalign Right for Your Teen?

Choosing the right orthodontic treatment is a big decision for any parent. While traditional braces have been around for decades, who doesn’t prefer a more discreet option: Invisalign.

At Central Avenue Dental, our team has helped countless teens achieve beautiful smiles with Invisalign.

Here’s what our team tells parents about Invisalign and teens.

The benefits of clear aligners for active teens

Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable plastic trays to gradually shift teeth into their proper positions.

One of the biggest advantages for teenagers is the lack of metal brackets and wires. Since the aligners are smooth, they tend to be more comfortable and less likely to irritate the cheeks and gums.

For teens involved in sports or music, Invisalign offers a level of flexibility that braces cannot match. There are no wires to poke the mouth during a game, and the trays can be removed briefly for playing wind instruments.

However, we always remind our patients that the aligners must be worn for 20 to 22 hours every day to be effective. If your teen is disciplined enough to keep the trays in place, they can enjoy a straighter smile without the dietary restrictions that come with traditional braces.

Maintaining oral hygiene during treatment

Keeping teeth clean is much easier with removable aligners. With traditional braces, food particles often get trapped in brackets, making it difficult to brush and floss thoroughly. This can lead to a buildup of plaque and a higher risk of cavities.

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is vital during orthodontic treatment to prevent permanent staining or decay.

Recent studies show that patients using clear aligners often have better gum health than those with fixed braces.

Our dentists monitor your teen’s progress during regular visits to our Manhattan or Valley Spring offices to ensure their teeth and gums remain healthy throughout the process.

Compliance and suitability for your teenager

While Invisalign is a great tool, it requires a commitment from the wearer. Most Invisalign Teen aligners include small blue compliance indicators that fade as the tray is worn. This helps parents and our experts track whether the teen is wearing the aligners for the required amount of time.

If your teen is prone to losing things or forgetting to put the trays back in after lunch, traditional braces are a more reliable option.

Invisalign can treat many common issues, such as crowding, gaps, and certain bite problems; some complex cases still require traditional orthodontics.

During a consultation, our experts will evaluate your teen’s bite and jaw structure to determine whether clear aligners will yield the best results. We use advanced digital scanning to give you a preview of how your teen’s smile will look after treatment is complete.
