5 Myths About Root Canals Debunked

5 Myths About Root Canals Debunked

Hearing that you need a root canal might feel like bad news. And it does mean your tooth has a serious decay issue that a simple filling can’t correct.

There is some good news in the mix, though. Specifically, root canals are usually a lot more comfortable than people expect.

We offer root canal therapy here at Central Avenue Dental. In addition to our office in Valley Stream, New York, we conveniently provide this treatment in the Midtown area of Manhattan, New York City. Our providers can help you learn what to expect with this treatment and, ideally, ease any fears you have.

Let’s banish a few misconceptions about root canals

#1: Root canals are painful

Most people fear root canals because they think it’s going to be an extremely uncomfortable experience. Actually, the most painful part should be the quick pinch you feel when we inject the anesthetic.

After you’re completely numb, the only thing you might feel is some pressure. Getting a root canal shouldn’t be any more painful than getting a filling. The main difference is that it takes longer.

#2: A root canal kills my tooth

The name “root canal” might make you think that we remove the roots of your tooth, killing it. Instead, a root canal gives you a way to save a seriously troubled tooth.

During treatment, we remove the decayed part of your tooth and the infected soft tissue (pulp) inside. Once your tooth is fully developed, it no longer needs the pulp to survive. This means a root canal does the opposite of killing your tooth. It saves it

#3: I only need a root canal if my tooth really hurts

In many cases, a tooth that needs a root canal will cause you pain. That’s not the only warning sign that you’re having a tooth decay issue, though. You might also notice hot or cold sensitivity or changes in your gums.

Our team can evaluate your teeth with X-rays to determine if they need care, such as a filling or root canal. If any tooth requires attention, acting quickly helps protect the part of your tooth that hasn’t yet decayed, even if it isn’t painful yet.

#4: Root canals are stressful

Does the thought of getting a root canal fill you with dread? Do you already deal with dental anxiety? If so, talk with us about nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

Using nitrous oxide during your appointment can take the stress out of a root canal. We offer this at both of our locations.

#5: Root canals come with a long and painful recovery

Some sensitivity is normal after a root canal, but most people go back to their normal activities right after their appointment. You don’t need to worry about days away from work or school.

To minimize any discomfort you might have after treatment, we recommend choosing soft foods and chewing gently for the first couple of days.

Now that we’ve told you a lot about what a root canal doesn’t entail, you might be wondering what it does. That depends on what your tooth needs. To get a clear idea of what root canal therapy would mean for you, call our Central Avenue Dental nearest you or book online today.
